“You’re doing what?!”

In March 2025, David made the first-ever locally-made denim in Tulsa, OK, and turned it into a jacket.

He learned to weave hand-dyed indigo denim right here in Tulsa, but this isn’t just any denim. To our knowledge, this is the first fully handwoven denim jacket in the U.S. since at least the 1700s

This project was supported by the Artists Creative Fund.

The Real Story Behind Denim

Denim has deep roots with a storied and controversial past. This textile’s history goes way beyond the neat, oversimplified version we’ve all heard. It’s global. It’s layered. It’s complex. From the Mesoamericans who mastered indigo dyeing thousands of years ago to the enslaved Africans whose knowledge shaped the U.S. textile industry, denim is a fabric with a past as rich as the blue it’s known for. David is digging deep into this history, researching the untold stories that deserve to be heard. And now, we’re weaving those stories into this one-of-a-kind fabric itself.

Hand-dyed Indigo

Our indigo comes straight from El Salvador, a nod to David’s Salvadoran roots and our brand’s commitment to eco-friendly fashion practices. The leaves of the indigo plant give denim its deep, rich color—something you can’t get with synthetic dyes. Plus, it’s non-toxic, unlike synthetic dyes and fabric materials.

After 8 rounds of indigo dips, over three days, with 30 skeins totaling 21,600 yards of yarn—all dyed by hand, they were ready for weaving.

Floor Loom Weaving

This isn’t just about making fabric—it’s about crafting a story. We’re using a traditional floor loom, weaving a warp-faced 3/1 twill with yarns from Hill Spinning Mill, the last 100% cotton spinning mill in the U.S.

David experimented with techniques to get the right balance of durability and softness. A denim that’s perfect for workwear but softer than a baby kitten.

History in the Making

On Saturday, March 8, 2025 we unveiled this handwoven denim in a free pop-up museum and shop event right here in Tulsa!

Guests saw the fabric up close, heard David talk about his journey, and shopped exclusive BZRO Clothing pieces made from this one-of-a-kind fabric.

Drumroll...

If only the internet let you touch things. This jacket is the softest denim you've ever touched. It doesn't have all of the processing materials layered on it—no starch or finishing chemicals. It's the sturdiest and softest denim you'll ever know.

Oh, and…

This is just the beginning. Our dream is to bring back the heart of American-made denim (and other garment textiles!)—fabric that’s sustainable, crafted with care, and rich in history.

We hope you'll come along for the ride.
